My opinion about Waiting for Godot

Waiting for Godot

The purpose of human life is an unanswerable question. It seems impossible to find an answer because we don’t know where to begin or whom to ask. Existence, to us seems to be something imposed upon us by an unknown force. So, waiting for Godot is an existentialist play, which deals with the meaninglessness of life. The word ‘existentialism’ stands for one’s awareness of one’s bigness. It stands for a vital principal of life. So, this play unfolds the absurdity and nothingness which is the reality of human existence as no one come in the play to the end. Therefore, the waiting becomes the ultimate way of humans.

Here, myth of Sisyphus can be found because Sisyphus is more famous for his punishment in the underworld. Then for what he did in his life. According to Greek myth Sisyphus is condemned to roll a rock - up to the top of a mountain, and the rock roll back down to the bottom every time, Every time he reaches at the top hence, Sisyphus does this thing which has a no meaning as well as purpose and in Waiting for Godot no one come, no one goes too. Estragon and Vladimir are waiting for Godot but Godot never comes. So by this play Samuel Beckett conveys his idea about meaninglessness of life.

To answer the question of setting here, Beckett used the same painting which was used by Casper David so it can be interpreted that Beckett took inspiration from Caspar David’s Painting and we know that the painting is either “men and women contemplating the moon” or “two men contemplating the moon” so this connection can be observed in the setting of the play.

In this play tree has its own significance because Estragon and Vladimir wait for Godot, But Godot never appears in the play. So in the first act the tree is barren, while in the second act a few leaves grow. So these leaves symbolized for the hope. Therefore, here some question which aroused in my mind

1) Is it coming back to life?
2) Is to simply to signify a lot of time has passed?

So Beckett puts a few leaves in the second act on the tree arouse a hope for the life and this can be a symbol of nature and life.

Waiting for Godot possesses multi-layered meaning, Here when evening falls in to night and moon rises at that time it can be said that night symbolizes nothingness in the life and moon is symbolized as a hope for Vladimir and Estragon who are waiting for Godot to come.

My Views on To The Lighthouse

Here is the link of the worksheet To The Lighthouse:

To The Lighthouse

1. Stream of consciousness is a technique which was first coined by William James. In this Stream of consciousness technique the story develops through the flow of thoughts in the minds of the characters. This technique is too hard to understand the novel at the first reading. This technique deals with the tracing a character's fragmentary thoughts and sensory feelings. Moreover; Virginia Woolf uses this technique in her novel to highlight ideas, feelings and thoughts of people deliberately. Here Virginia Woolf depicts this technique to show the inner chaos of the common people by this novel. Moreover, her narrative technique can be categorized as complex one, which indicates several features as enlisted below

• Complexities of human relationships
• Scuffle of women in the society etc.

2. Yes, I agree with the question that this novel is the tribute as well as critique of Mrs Ramsay as she is a round character, who remains the same from the initial part to end. Further we can say that Mrs Ramsay and Lily Briscoe’s relationship is first introduced artistically. Lily has been working on painting a picture of Mrs Ramsay, who is a hard subject to paint considering how much she is always distracted by her role as mother. The painting always slips Mrs Ramsay’s mind as being unimportant. Therefore Lily Briscoe is the mouth figure of Virginia Woolf through this character Woolf wants to say that women can paint and write as earlier was the belief that women cannot paint and write. Therefore Virginia Woolf describes the character of Lily Briscoe by putting her in to the novel.

3. It depends upon our individual perspective. Lighthouse stands for Mrs Ramsay or narrator and The Lighthouse can be indicated as a Symbol of Ramsay’s Family. Here Woolf present in the character of Lily Briscoe. We can say that Woolf was present herself throughout the novel “To the lighthouse”. We also see that through Lily’s character Woolf also presents the strength. And we can also say that family problem is not so painful rather than social problems. Therefore this novel can be a symbol of the family.

4. Joseph Blonter has given two types of myths, which are patterned together as given below

• Pagan Myth
• Oedipus myth.

The Pagan myth includes mothers, daughters and wife. In this myth Rhea is presented as a mother, Demeter is indicated as a wife and Persephone is shown as a daughter. If we connect this myth with Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse”, it is (Rhea,Demeter,Wife) presented in only one character that is Mrs Ramsay. This myth shows the womanhood in modernist literature. However in Post-colonial literature it was known as an ‘Ideal Womanhood’. Oedipus myth is presented in the characters like Mrs Ramsay and James. He has attraction towards Mrs Ramsay. This both myths are represented unconsciously in this novel and the female phallic symbol is ‘The Window’. How male phallic symbols are connected with Mrs Ramsay.

5. To The Lighthouse is a type of ‘Kunstlerroman’novel. Here ‘Kunstlerroman’ means growth of an artist. Here we can find that growth of an artist through the character of lily Briscoe. In other words we may say that struggle of an artist. In the novel Lily’s character is a struggle of an artist.so in this novel the character of Lily makes this novel a ‘Kunstlerroman’.

6. In this question I am agree with that this novel is more poignant than movie because when we watched movie at that time we couldn't imagine more about the character, situation, location etc. so we may say that after watching movie we faced some restriction.  And when we read this novel we imagine through our self as we imagine characters, place with the help of our imagination.

My Reviews on The Da Vinci Code

Here is the link of the worksheet of The Da Vinci Code:

In reply to this worksheet i have given below answer.

The Da Vinci Code

So far as my view points are concerned about The Da Vinci Code. It is a suspense novel by Dan Brown. First of all it is very much necessary to clarify that what is conspiracy theory so it signifies the idea that many important political events or economic and social trends are the products of secret plots that are largely unknown to the general public. This novel also deals with the suspense thriller as it means a suspenseful, sensational genre of story, book, play or film. In this novel there is a difference in beginning in movie and novel and Dan Brown also has raised his ideas on sacred feminine which has its own importance in the novel. Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu are the major characters of this novel so through these characters Dan Brown has also penetrated the idea of History and Christianity.

My opinion about The Birthday Party

Here is the link of the worksheet The Birthday Party:

The Birthday Party

After watching movie the Birthday party I can say that it is a play depicting the modern rootlessness of man, who is wandering with no origin and no destination. As in many absurdist works ‘The Birthday Party’ is full of disjointed information that defies efforts to distinguish between reality and illusion.

Further we can also say that Pinter takes Beckett's theatrical world, developing a new comedic style to reflect the chaos and insecurity of the world stuck by the two world wars. Pinter is credited with the invention of a new dramatic style known as 'Comedy of menace' which is an offshoot of the seminal 'Theater of Absurd’. So at first I would like to describe what that is so it (Comedy of Menace) is a kind of psychological drama in which supposedly secure space is contested by characters who are the embodiments of each other fears, insecurities or latent sexuality.

It is a kind of comedy in which laughter in some or all situations is accompanied by some impending disaster. The comedy frightens and unsettles. The Absurd in Pinter's plays comes from menace. Some of the many features of Comedy of menace can be summed up as, plausibility of hidden danger, apparent normality, a sense of impending disaster,  use of irony where communication is useless, surrealistic confusion that obscure or distort facts, use of place that is violated by outsiders. Menace and fear are not external elements as Pinter opines

"They do not come from extraordinary, sinister people, but from you and me, it is all a matter of circumstances"

So at last it can be said that the Birthday Party is a comedy of Menace.
Therefore these are my interpretations about The Birthday Party.

My views on One Night at the Call Center

Here is the link of the worksheet of One Night at the Call Center:

One Night at the Call Center:

Here I am giving my opinions about my understanding of the novel one night at the call center first it is necessary to know about Menippean satire as it is a form of satire, usually in prose, which has a length and structure similar to a novel and is characterized by attacking mental attitudes rather than specific individuals or entities. Its fantasies create extraordinary situations for the purpose of testing philosophical truth especially through the manipulation of the perspective’s it can also be said that One Night at the Center deals with the current situation of society and criticizes on the society. This Novel is about six people who working in connexion call center and it takes during span of one night. The story takes a dramatic and decisive turn through a literal Deus ex Machina, when the characters receive a phone call from God.

Here I want to all say something about the title of this novel as it tells about the effects of globalization in call center.so the writer wants to give us message that those who are working in the call center they are not getting good salary but they get all these things with the help of their skills and creativity. Further I want to also comment on the theme of this novel as it deals with the anxieties and insecurities of the rising Indian middle class, during questions about career, inadequacy, marriage, family conflict in a changing India and the relationship of the young Indian middle class to both executives and ordinary clients whom they serve in the U.S.so here there is an aspects of themselves and their lives that make them angry and they would like to change.

So these are my views about this novel.

My Reviews on The Sense of an Ending

Here is the link of the worksheet of The Sense of an Ending

http://dilipbarad.blogspot.in/2014/02/the-sense-of-ending-julian-barnes.html

Here are my views as given below.

The Sense of an Ending

Here I am giving my general views about The Sense of an Ending as Barnes fiction is also foregrounded in psychological realism and his themes are serious poignant and we can say that Heart-felt. He frequently addresses the nature of love, particularly its dark side, exploring humankind’s capacity for jealousy, obsession and infidelity.

In the novel The Sense of an Ending the title plays vital role as the title itself suggests that the sense of an ending means here the question arises in our mind that whose ending is this? and secondly we can also say that according to the sense an individual can interpret the ending of this novel because here in the novel Julian Barnes has left us in thinking at the end of the novel therefore as per my reading it can be said that the ending of the novel is not clearly given or Barnes has deliberately done this to make reader thinking.

The Sense of an Ending is about the person’s memory in youthful days. The novella is divided into two divisions as they are entitled as Part-1 and Part-2.The first part begins with four intellects arrogant Friends. We are told two out of four. The first one is Tony Webster, who is the narrator of the story. While on the other hand the second one is Adrian the most talented and intellectual among four. When they were in the last year of the college, a boy killed himself getting a girl pregnant.

Thus the sense of an Ending is not just the person’s story; it is a story of a network of relationships between Tony Webster and Veronica but whose ending is this! That we cannot understand clearly till the end of the novel.

Here I want to give reply about the question of ’Blood Money’ so here it can be interpreted that why does Veronica say ‘Blood Money’? Because there are two persons who are responsible for Adrian’s suicide they are Sarah and Tony Webster according to Veronica. Due to Sarah Adrian committed suicide as he makes her pregnant and another reason can also be given is that Veronica thinks that Tony Webster is responsible as he writes letter to Adrian.so the letter causes damage. Therefore Veronica thinks that Tony Webster is responsible for the suicide of Adrian. Hence we may say that she calls that money as ‘Blood Money’.

So these are my views about The Sense of an Ending.
